IIRC the main difference is that every one has its own campaign (order is HoMMV -> Hammers of Fate -> Tribes of the East) and scenarios/maps. Hammers of Fate need the base game btw. But Tribes of the East, as a stand-alone game, has all the factions and creatures, so if you only want to play skirmishes/scenarios, you can jump straight to Tribes
Apparently, the application couldn't run because a DLL file was missing. I searched for this DLL (the name is "d3dx9_25.dll") in other folders, and I found it in the Heroes 5 folder (where the application is), called "bin". Then I copy this DLL to the H5-Hammers of Fate folder (called bin1). This solved the problem.
